Chinese astrology signs
Whatever our background or interest in Feng Shui is, it is always useful to take time and reflect on what may be coming in our direction over the horizon in the New Year. Here I would like to share with you my insights using different perspectives and formulae that look at the influence of time, both on us as individuals and also our space.
I like to think of the annual influences in Feng Shui rather like the seasons. In that sense, they are predictable but not right down to the wire. For example, knowing that Spring is on the way, be prepared for it and take advantage of it. If you know your front door is weak and the winter is going to bring strong winds, then be prepared. For me it has been a fascinating study simply to be prepared.
What
Chinese Animal are you?
Chinese Astrology dates back some 2600 years BC. Unlike Western Zodiac Astrology, which is made up of 12 months, Chinese Astrology is made up of 12 year cycles. Each year is given the name of an animal Buddha summoned all the animals to bid him farewell before he died, and only 12 showed up. He then named each of the years after these 12 animals.
The Chinese believe that the animal of your year of birth actually hides in your heart and in your very being.
Discovering you Animal
Chinese Astrology years begin on new moons and hence their new year does not coincide with the Western one. If you are born in January of February, then the animal of the year below may not be correct. It may well mean that you belong to the year before.

The Water Dragon Year 2012
23/01/2012- 09/02/2013
Overview
This is one of those exciting, turning point years. In Chinese Astrology it’s known as the Dragon Year, and these show up every 12 years. However, each one is prefixed by one of the Five Elements and this particular year is a Water Dragon Year. Somewhat calmer than, for example, a Wood or Fire Dragon Years.
Water in Chinese Medicine, Healing and Astrology, represents the colour black. Hence it is often known as the Black Dragon. Water brings with it a sense of new beginnings as well as the resolution and sorting out of issues. But the Dragon is always a somewhat turbulent character, and I think that 2012 will largely be a changeable and unpredictable year.
Previous Water Dragon Year – 1952
Events
· The death of King George VI.
· The UK developed the atomic bomb.
· The ceasefire in Korea was postponed.
· Mau Mau uprising in Kenya.
· The great smog in London (December ’52).
· The US detonation of the first hydrogen bomb.
· The establishment of the European Parliament.
· US Special Forces are created.
Famous Water Dragons
Martin O’Neill, Viv Richards, Bernard Stiegler, David Byrne, Dan Aykroyd, Jimmy Connors, Mickey Rourke, Vladimir Putin, Jenny Agutter.
The Year Ahead for the 12 Chinese Animals
The Rat
If there is one animal within the Chinese zodiac that will survive or ride out a storm, then it is most definitely the Rat. The Rat is famous for their instinct regarding self-preservation. Since this is a Water Dragon Year and the Rat is born out of the element Water, they will feel quite at home.
The adaptability of the Rat to the changing world and unexpected issues that will show up, will make them one of the greatest leaders this year. They’re likely to be successful in anything commercial and that requires the skills of being an entrepreneur.
The Ox
I admire the Ox for its steadfastness and resilience under any kind of pressure. There is likely to be some stress for them this year regarding finances or business affairs, but at least the prospect of either hard work or more work will not upset the Ox. Of all the signs of the Chinese zodiac, the Ox is the one who soaks up a challenge and just keeps going. I always admire their powerful and stoic attitude to the work ethic.
This is a wonderful year for the Ox to develop a new business or project early on in the new Water Dragon Year: something fresh, different and particularly innovative. Any challenges will easily be offset as the Ox always rises to the challenge and simply gets on with it.
The Tiger
This could be a tremendous year for anyone born in the year of the Tiger regarding finances and long term investments. Deep down the Tiger is resilient and takes any kind of challenge or even provocation very lightly. 2011 was likely to have been reasonably tough, but now the new Water Dragon Year will prove far easier.
An important piece of advice for all Tigers this year is to communicate very clearly with any business partners or colleagues. They should also avoid being too demanding or assertive. They are best suited in 2012 if they focus in to one or two key projects and avoid being sidetracked.
The Rabbit
2011 was the Rabbit’s year, but if it was not as successful as they’d wished, then the Dragon Year can also be useful to sort or complete any unfinished business. The Rabbit is very diplomatic, kind, thoughtful and generous. They know exactly when and how to communicate in a gentle and fair manner. They also have a very deep love of their friends and family.
The Dragon admires, supports and encourages any Chinese sign that is family or home orientated. Therefore, provided the Rabbit avoids getting embroiled in some political or economic argument, they are likely to succeed greatly in 2012. Rabbits are also famously romantic and the autumn could prove to be a very powerful time on that front.
The Dragon
Despite this being the Year of the Dragon, most Dragons will go through a fair amount of ups and downs this year. It is in essence a kind of rebirth that will occur for the Dragon. Dragons usually work through any disputes or misunderstandings, they are hard-working, they are wonderful to be together with, and many are colourful and extrovert.
Dragons are generous and love to entertain their family, their friends and their colleagues. Sometimes this natural desire to entertain and be amongst guests leads them into contact with some individuals who are less than trustworthy. Dragons really need to be on the look-out for these kinds of characters this year and make sure they avoid them. For Dragons who work as an employee, there’s a chance of a raise this year; while for those who run their own businesses, it’s a time of success. All Dragons need to be careful not to be too dictatorial this year.
The Snake
Of all the animals in the Chinese zodiac, the Snake is endowed with the most incredible intuition and natural wisdom. The Snake can also see through most individuals and can spot and highlight the more spiritual qualities in others. The Snake tends to be deeply trusting of those that appear sensitive, fair and just.
It would be wise for all Snakes this year to push forward their vision and dream. Traditionally, in the spring in a four seasons climate, the Snake would come out of the cave, having hibernated all winter. Therefore all Snakes in the Year of the Dragon need to be alert and ready for action early on in this year. Unnecessary procrastinating will lead to being either left out of the game or they may fall prey to difficulties or gossip or conflicts. Remember also that 2013 will be the Year of the Snake.
The Horse
Deep down, the Horse in Chinese Astrology has an inner core and spirit from the Fire element. This is also shared, in many ways, by the passionate and outgoing Dragon. Therefore any razzmatazz, parties, fun and excitement that the Dragon brings into play will be enjoyed and indeed revelled in by the Horse.
It is not unusual for the Horse to be distracted or sometimes ‘scared’ by major distractions. This is true of the horse in the natural world as well. Therefore there needs to be a certain amount of caution this year from the Horse in terms of taking on any complicated financial or emotional situations. The best time of year ahead will be in the summer, since this represents the peak of Fire energy which will support and strengthen the Horse. Romance is very much on the cards for any single Horses in 2012.
The Sheep
This animal in Chinese Astrology is sometimes known as the Ram or the Goat. They love their independence, while at the same time it is vital for them to have a certain sense of security. It’s not unusual for the Sheep to want to be centre-stage and for many, they are very artistic and sensitive. There is a true contradiction sometimes where they would love to be independent and travel, while at the same time know that there is some kind of back-up or security.
This year their finances look good. All Sheep need to be careful this year of not being critical of others who they believe are not as hard-working or as talented as they are. The spring is a wonderful time of year for the Sheep in 2012.
The Monkey
In Chinese Astrology the Monkey is the most skilful, playful and in many ways optimistic. They are very, very clever. Any situation that’s a challenge can easily be turned around by the Monkey’s foresight and skills. In the digital world in which we now live, the Monkey (and to a degree the Rooster) find the latest gadgets the easiest to understand.
In the Water Dragon Year the Monkey is likely to learn even more. In fact, it’s good that they narrow down this and make it more yang and even specialise. A very good time to start to learn something fresh and new. This particular year will also be excellent for the Monkey to undertake and be involved in some generous action, especially around charity. 2013 looks especially hot.
The Rooster
The Rooster and the Monkey in Chinese Astrology share the inner core element of Metal. The Rooster is ambitious and feeds off new ideas and loves a goal to work towards. When the Dragon comes into view, it will demand of the Rooster real clarity and communication and this would be especially true in terms of teamwork.
The Rooster in 2012 really must cooperate and respond very quickly to issues as they arise. Being quick-witted and in many ways a natural genius, it’s not good enough this year to go it alone. The presence of the Dragon will demand that the Rooster play a team game rather than work quickly and intuitively in isolation. A changeable year, but also one where work and finance are on the up and up. If the Rooster is smart there’ll be a new avenue that could pay far better and be even more beneficial than the job they have at present.
The Dog
In Chinese Astrology the Dog shares the deep inner core of the Earth element with the Dragon. However, they are opposite in terms of the Chinese zodiac and for this reason they are seen to clash. In my experience, I always find that clashes or opposites can also prove to be an attraction. Dogs are immensely loyal and are pack animals.
Dogs need to be quick-witted and decisive this year because the Dragon will demand that of them. Dogs are the most honest and the most communicative of the animals in Chinese Astrology. The first few months of 2012 could be quite arduous, but after that the year opens up to be magnificent for them.
The Pig
By nature, the Pig is happy, helpful and the best host, in terms of Chinese Astrology. They’re also sometimes known as the Boar. Hard-working, loyal and fairly materialistic. They know how to have a good time and they make sure that others around them do as well.
Deep down, the Pig has the Water element and therefore the Water Dragon Year is no hindrance to them. However, the element Water can sometimes prove to be slow and sluggish. With the presence of so much of this element this year, people born in the year of the Pig need to make a little more effort than usual to move forward. Otherwise stagnation could occur and this could affect finance in particular. Anybody born in the year of the Pig who works for someone else is in an excellent position to go it alone this year. At the end of 2012 the way ahead will look very clear to them.
The Metal Rabbit Year - 2011
Overview
In Chinese Astrology, the elements and the years move in cycles of 12. There are five elements – Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood – and 12 animals, namely the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, the Pig, the Rat, the Ox, and the Tiger. Therefore, it is once in 60 years that a similar combination of element and animal will appear. On 3 February 2011, it is the turn of the Metal Rabbit to come into view. The last time it was here was in 1951.
Famous Metal Rabbits
These people were born in 1951: Jane Seymour, Gordon Brown, Patricia Richardson, Kurt Russell, Bob Geldof, Sherry Aldridge.
1951 also saw the Korean War at its peak. The element Metal is from the West and the Rabbit represents the Wood element from the East. Sadly, there is quite a possibility of further inflammation on that front. If it is not from Korea, then expect some kind of aggravation or conflict, either real or financial, between the East and the West this year.
On a brighter note, what is in store for your Star and for your Animal in 2011?
The animals will interact differently when the Rabbit comes into view. The Rabbit in some translations is known as the Cat. Generally, the Rabbit is seen as sensitive, gentle, diplomatic, intuitive and desires creature comforts. By nature, the Rabbit does not enjoy, or like to take on, conflict.
The Rat
This Star in Chinese Astrology is the first in this system. There is a parallel or a similarity with Aries from Western Astrology.2011 will be a very busy one for all Rats. Be careful not to push yourself to the limit and not to take on more than you can realistically do. The Rat is on a roll in 2011 and you may feel that you can literally do anything but be careful not to let the side down!
The Ox/Buffalo
In 2011, Rabbits are very acquisitive and have a huge appetite for money and fashionable items. Luckily, your hardworking Ox nature is not going to make hasty deals overnight. Be patient this year and this will help you enormously. It is important for you not to overreact emotionally this year, or to overspend. This is due to the Rabbit’s quick-witted and intuitive sense of persuasion.
The Tiger
Tigers and Rabbits belong to the same Wood element in Chinese Astrology. While the Rabbit may prove to be a much quieter animal, it will on the other hand encourage you to be very impulsive. Be wary not to bite off more than you can chew this year. Plenty of new ideas are likely to come your way and make sure that you make more effort than usual to keep yourself active physically.
The Rabbit
This is your year and the last time it turned up was 12 years ago. It is actually a fabulous year for you, especially on the finance side. Be crystal clear in where you would like to invest your money and also consider the importance of timing. Be on the look-out for investments that at a deeper look are risky. Avoid this year undertaking any risky or adventurous sports. The Metal element governing this year effectively can clash the Rabbit, and small or minor accidents could occur.
The Dragon
This is a good year for you to put a determined, but quiet effort into your career. Tread carefully and avoid upsetting sensitive souls in your sphere of contact. It’s a fabulous year for you to really polish your skill or hidden talent. Get it ready to unleash it next year! Regarding your health, pay attention to small issues that could get troublesome. Generally, keep fit and avoid getting idle.
The Snake
This is a very busy year for you! Plenty of travel on the horizon and lots of diverse activities will show up. The Rabbit is very stylish and will team up well with your attractive Snake to create perfection on all fronts. Make sure that you come out and communicate very clearly this year with others. Be aware of any back-stabbing and this will not show up provided you are open, clear and transparent in all your dealings.
The Horse
Altogether a very happy and productive year for you. There will be some issues, but your hardworking nature will overcome those with ease. It is important for you to drop some of your pride and allow others to help you this year. The presence of the Rabbit this year will have a very mellow, softening effect. The Rabbit will help you take yourself less seriously and keep you calm when others could be present to aggravate you on different fronts. Altogether a good year for you.
The Sheep/Goat
Your year loves to have independence and to travel and range the world at large. This is definitely a year when the Rabbit comes into view, so you can afford to relax and let your guard down. Like you, the Rabbit is perfect at creating a wonderful, calm and supportive environment. However, you must keep yourself active this year. If you’re retired, even consider some volunteer work.It is an important year for you to be proactive, especially regarding investments and work. There is even the opportunity on the horizon this year for you to receive an award or to be recognised for your talents.
The Monkey
Of all the Chinese animals, the Monkey is the most proficient when it comes to dealing with problems or technical issues. You will be at the top of your game on these fronts this year. It may also be called upon more frequently. Be wary this year that others do not take advantage of your generosity or your time.
Make time this year to relax and chill whenever you can get the opportunity. If you feel like taking extended holidays, then it’s definitely the year for you to do this. Also, for your own benefit on many fronts, try to get involved on a voluntary level with a local project.
The Rooster
This is the year that there is technically a clash in the atmosphere. The reason being is that the Rooster is opposite the Rabbit in the Chinese Horoscope system. Therefore, be wary that you will have a lot on your plate on many different fronts.Be cautious this year with your spending. Get on top of managing your finances, or at least get someone to help you with that. All in all, avoid any kind of risky ventures this year.
The Dog
Born in the year of the Dog, you are always hardworking, noble and very loyal. On the work front this year, there is potential for either a raise or for you to move up the ladder. On all fronts, work will come effortlessly to you this year. While all will go well in terms of your work, it is the spending and the investment side that you need to be cautious of. If you have any concerns over this, do seek good, responsible advice. You are very well protected this year, but at the same time, avoid getting into a fight with anyone in a position of rank or power above you.
Recent Rabbit Years
These include 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, and 2011.

The Year of the Metal Tiger 2010
In the Chinese Calendar, the yin or yang version of one of the Five Elements will show up throughout a ten-year period. This will also coincide with one of the 12 Chinese Animals. Therefore, with this combination of the Five Elements with the 12 Animals, there are 60 years in the Chinese Calendar.
The Metal Tiger year begins in 2010 on Valentines Day! The last one was way back in 1950 and certainly as a year it brought about plenty of change, challenge and even war. You have two conflicting and very powerful elements at play during the year of the Metal Tiger. To begin with, the Metal in a year that ends with a zero, e.g. 2010, 1950, 1940, 1930, etc., is yang Metal. This can be symbolic of a sword or an axe. It brings about decisions, compliance and strength. There's also quite a strong military aspect to yang Metal. In addition, the 12-year cycle of Animals brings the Tiger into play, and this animal belongs to the Wood element (Metal and Wood clash) and the Tiger represents defence, power, strength and sometimes conflict. When Metal and the Tiger combine, you literally have a coiled up Tiger that is ready to unleash or pounce on its prey!
On
I believe that as time spins quicker and with stronger force nowadays, we may see many examples of rapid change occurring.
My overview of the 12 Animals in the year of the Metal Tiger
The Rat
The Rat is always clever, elegant, quick and very charming. Always careful with money and often feel that they never have 'enough in their larder'. Always popular and charming, their family and friends are very important to them.
2009 saw the Rat having to work hard and keep its head below the parapet. The Ox made sure that he put his nose to the grindstone! The Tiger, on the other hand, will be much quicker, which will worry the Rat a little bit, but it's fine provided the Rat goes with the flow and takes the opportunities. Perhaps in 2009 travel was difficult for the Rat due to either work or health or finances, but 2010 will be a lot different. Time to get out there and enjoy!
The Ox
The Ox,
sometimes known as the
2010 is going to be much quicker than 2009. In many ways this will be a challenge for the Ox. But, if there's been something the Ox has wanted to do - a new job, a career, a hobby or a new friendship - all of that will easily come to the surface during 2010. The possibility of romance is there and plenty of possible new career opportunities as well. All in all a very exciting year.
The Tiger
This, after all, is the Tiger's year! The Tiger is generous, honest, flexible and often very entertaining. Make a friend of a Tiger and you have a friend for life. When a Tiger takes on a project, everyone will notice.
Famous Tigers include Tom Cruise, Leonardo di Caprio, Dwight D Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth II, Jay Leno, Karl Marx and Marilyn Monroe.
Always an exciting year for the animal whose year it is - in this case the Tiger. 2009 was a little too sluggish for the quick and agile Tiger. But the future looks bright this year. Financially things are on the up and up and new ideas to make money are also there. The Tiger needs to be careful not to take on too many projects and spread their energy too thinly. The early months of the year, March, April and May, are particularly good for the Tiger to get noticed.
The Rabbit
Sometimes
also known as the Cat in Chinese astrology, there is a loving and caring side
of the Rabbit. They make the best diplomats within Chinese astrology.
They're naturally cautious, a little bit nervous. However, having
said that, they are regarded in
The Rabbit shares the same Wood element deep down as the Tiger. They are, however, the lighter or more yin version. In the Tiger Year the Rabbit needs to be careful, since the Tiger likes to dash around at a great pace. The Rabbit needs to build in lots of time and space for recreation. Everything will be fast, including promotion, windfalls and financial success. The Rabbit just needs to be careful not to burn out or take on too much.
The Dragon
The Dragon is strong, sometimes controlling, full of energy and incredibly talented. They have a tremendously strong constitution and most Dragons have very good health. They love to be involved and need to be active all of the time. If they're not fully employed in some kind of activity, then they'll find something to do and will often then get in the way!
After the slow 2009 that was driven by the Ox, the Dragon is going to love 2010 because they enjoy the pace that the Tiger brings to the party. Opportunities will show up and this is very good for the Dragon's career. They love working with other people and therefore new clients, new business opportunities are really there for grabs for them. The Dragon needs to be careful that they're not too impulsive in terms of either what they buy or what they take on. It's important that the Dragon takes time out to be with its family this year, otherwise they can become a workaholic.
The Snake
Unlike in the West where the Snake is regarded as something devious or dishonest, in Chinese astrology the Snake is valued for its wisdom and intuition. They are always amusing, intelligent and very romantic. Often lucky with money, they're quick-witted and love the more psychic side of life.
The Snake would have enjoyed the slower pace of the year of the Ox in 2009. However, the speed of the Tiger year of 2010 may bring some surprises. The Snake will be swept along by the speed of the year and provided they can keep up, it will be fine. There's lots of competition on the career front, and provided they keep in touch with what's going on, they're likely to advance and get a promotion. Fun, romance and travel are very well starred this year for the Snake.
The Horse
The Horse is always hardworking and proud. Many are independent, fun and gregarious. However, the Fire that resides deep inside the Horse can make them impatient and sometimes irritable. They always need to be on the go and involved in what everybody else is doing.
Horses love the energy and the excitement that the Tiger brings to the party in 2010. Changes for the Horse may include a move of residence, or members of their close family moving out of the house, or some moving in. A very busy year for the Horse and one where they're likely to be invited to all kinds of meetings and parties throughout the year. The Horse needs to be careful in terms of their health and avoid burning out this year. They should also keep a watchful eye on their money, as it is easy for them to get carried away and spend too much. A change of career is on the horizon during the months of March, April and May.
The Sheep
The Sheep is sometimes known as the Goat in Chinese astrology. They have an amazing imagination and they are often very gifted. They are adaptable and often feel that their talents or skills could be better utilised elsewhere. The saying that the grass is greener on the other side is very true as far as the Goat is concerned. They have a wonderful sense of optimism and have a very good eye for detail, colour, clothing and interior design. Sometimes when the going gets tough, they really prefer to opt out.
The quieter 2009 governed by the Ox suited the Sheep in many ways. The Tiger, on the other hand, is going to bring a lot more fire and heat to the party. This is good for the more creative and artistic Sheep. New job opportunities will show up, as well as their creative streak can become much stronger. New jobs could easily show up, but there is a word of caution on the finance front. Any new deals, developments or investments always in the Tiger year for the Sheep they need to get careful independent advice.
The Monkey
The Monkey is bright, clever and extremely talented. The digital age does not bother them at all. They love the latest gizmos and gadgets. They're fun, witty and the life-and-soul of the party. Life for the Monkey is never predictable, but you can guarantee it will be fun.
The Monkey really needs to keep up with the Tiger in 2010. There's a danger that the combination of these energies is far too hot - and that Fire, or excessive amounts of Fire, could be an issue. Therefore the Monkey needs to be careful in 2010 to be moderate about what they take on otherwise they risk burning out. Plenty of changes are on the horizon in terms of work and relationship as well. Monkeys should really take a break at the peak of the year, between June, July and August. They need to budget well this year and make more effort than usual to listen to friends advice, especially concerning finance and relationship.
The Rooster
Always outgoing, popular, fun and sometimes extravagant. They're very direct and it is important that you pay them compliments! They're very good with their friends and family and will always proffer advice, even if it's not asked for! They love their family and their friends and will do anything for them.
The presence of the Tiger this year can in many ways bring out the best in the Rooster. The speedy, quick, witty and party-loving side of the Rooster will chill just a little bit this year. On the other hand, their knowledge, their wisdom and their expertise, especially to do with finance or technology, will be seized upon by others this year. They must be careful not to take on too much and exhaust themselves. There are opportunities for travel and adventure and romance this year. But at the same time, the Rooster must pace themselves otherwise there is the chance that they could burn out.
The Dog
Always loyal to their friends and family. The Dog is essentially a pack animal and is very hardworking and stands up for those that are closest to them. Sometimes they're stubborn, but it is their honesty and integrity that is superb. They are the most brilliant listeners and often their advice flows out of them in an almost intuitive fashion. Their bark is often worse than their bite and their loyalty is tremendous.
2009 and the year of the Ox was not the easiest time. However, the Tiger year brings a much more optimistic side out in the Dog. There will still be the odd challenge here and there, but the slow moving energy of the year of the Ox, which made the Dog sit on their worries, has now passed by. There is the opportunity that they could receive a bonus, a gift, a pay rise or some kind of promotion at work. The Dog needs to be careful this year not to simply scan financial arrangements or contracts. Best advice for the Dog is to read the small print and certainly pass any contract past a lawyer this year.
The Pig
The Pig, sometimes known as the Boar, is undoubtedly the best host in Chinese astrology. They reallly enjoy looking after other people and making them feel completely at ease. Their gatherings, their dinner parties, their events or functions, are memorable. They love their creature comforts and like to tune in to their friends and family. They are extremely bright, but they tend to hide this intelligence or mask it.
The Pig needs to be careful this year regarding their finances. The speed of the year of the Tiger can encourage them to spend too much and in an unnecessary way. The Pig is often fond of creature comforts and therefore the advice is not to go too far on that front. It is also important that the Pig looks at all the fine detail to do with communication, contracts and money. By being swept along by the speed of the Tiger, it is easy for the Pig to overlook or forget some salient point. It's good for the Pig to relax and let off steam this year. A more spiritually orientated spa-based holiday would be a perfect treat.
